What is a File and a Folder

    Image a hard drive like a filing cabinet that stores folders with files in them.  That is how your hard drive is set up!!!
Your files would be your word documents, pictures, websites, etc.  You would normally put the files into a folder  the most common folder you store files in is called Documents .   Windows Xp should have a picture, movie, and music folder in or separate from the documents folder.  In this section of the website you will learn how to create folders and files.  How to rename a folder or file.  You will also learn how to keep your folders organized.

                                Making A Folder
    Making a Folder Can help you keep your files organized!!!  Just like when your working you don't want to mix up your
files.  There are two ways to make a New folder.  Here is how to make a folder on your desktop.  
 
  1.  Right click on your mouse.  
  2. Go to New and click on Folder.  
  3. Type in the name of your folder in the name box.  
  4. Click on the folder and
  5.You're done!!!!!

    You can do this inside of other folders too.   Note: You can not do this on a scroll menu on the start button all you have to  is double-click on the folder to open a window and follow the steps 1-5 above.  You can also make folders when your saving a file too.  Follow these steps to make a folder when saving a file.

  1. On a program click File, then go to Save as.  
  2. Click the folder with the star.  
  3. Name your folder in the name box.  
  4. Click on the folder
  5. You're done.  

   Making folders for your files can be like having dividers for  your papers and it will help you stay organized on your computer.

Saving a File

     When you make a document you probably would want to save it.  Saving a file is always a good idea.  Imagine you wrote
a long report that you didn't save it and the computer freezes and you have to turn of your computer.  When you turn it back
on your report will not be there.  Saving will insure that your files will still be there after you turn off the computer.
Here is how you save a file.  

  1. On the program your using click on File then click on Save as.  
  2. Go to the folder you want to save it in by double clicking on the folders.   Note: Make sure you double-click to folder you want to save it in.
  3.  Type the name of your file in the file name box.  
  4. Click on the save button.  
  5. You're Done!!!!!
   
    Now your folder will always be there as long as you don't delete it.  Make sure you save often. You can do this by clicking on File then click on Save. It will automatically save to the file name you chose for that file.  Some programs will have a button in the that has a picture of a disk.  This is also a save button.  Just click on it once to save.

Renaming a File or Folder

    Sometimes you might decide to change the name of your file or folder but you don't want to make a new folder or remake a file.  There is a way to do this.  Follow these three steps.  

  1. Right click on the folder or file you want to change and click Rename.  
  2.  Type in the new name for the folder or file.  
  3. Click on the folder and your done.  You can also change the name of the folder or file by double clicking the text.
  4. You're Done!!!!!!!

Tips for Good File Organization

    It is always a good idea to keep your files organized.  This will help you find files faster and make it easy for other people to find.  Here are ten tips for keeping files organized
